Peek CEO: buy two Peeks, your next iPhone or G1 bill is on us

Yesterday we sat down for an interview with Amol Sarva, CEO of the email-handheld startup Peek. We're in the midst of transcribing what was a fairly interesting conversation, but in the middle of our chat he proposed a curious deal, and we wanted to put it out there (as well as see the company put its money where its mouth is). Sarva and co. are pretty convinced that while the Peek may not be the perfect device for the hardcore gadget junkie, it is the perfect device for their moms or girlfriends (or boyfriends, we assume) -- in fact, they're so convinced that they're offering to pay a month of said junkie's iPhone or G1 bill (up to $150) if they buy a Peek for their mom... and girlfriend. According to Amol, if you buy two of the devices (which you can get for $79.95 right now) and activate them, the company will cover your November cellphone bill. Amol himself will be heading up this project, and as long as you place your order by December 1st, you can make the magic happen. Teclast's upcoming 3.5-inch PMP plays media, is portable

The Teclast OEM (original equipment manufacturer) is now showing a new 3.5" MP4 Player. The details are still rough but it will have the following features:

* Rockchip RK2706

* 3.5" OLED display

* Capacitive touch buttons (not touch screen)

* Support for CMMB/DVB-T

* 1500mAH Li-Ion Battery

I think that the 3.5" display alone is great as you can expect this player's size to be similar to the iPhone/iPOD Touch. The fact that the display is a large 3.5" OLED display means that this player will have nothing short of stunning video quality. I would expect that the OLED display will mean that this won't be one of the lower cost models however.

I find it interesting that Teclast's OEM is now starting to put the CMMB/DVB-T standard into their players. This is the next in a line of added features that started with TV-Out and FM Transmitters. There is no news whether or not this player will support TV-Out or an FM Transmitter but it is quite likely.

We don't yet know what this player will be called and we have no news as to when it will become available. Stay tuned here for more information.

NXE hitting 360s with red ring, freezing and sorta-sexy-avatar issues?

If you wouldn't mind looking up from that avatar creation screen for a second -- yes, we're aware of how much that t-shirt selection means about you as a person -- you might notice that your Xbox 360 is dead. At least, a few hapless souls on the Xbox forums seem to think NXE is to blame for such atrocities. Numerous folks are reporting variously bad red ring configurations, random freezing and a huge pile of blockbuster titles that won't just play themselves. The biggest problem is that Microsoft isn't universally treating problems caused by NXE as an "oh, our bad" sort of situation, and at least from anecdotes we're seeing has charged quite a few folks $100 to fix their freshly-out-warranty Xbox 360s -- not to mention separating them for weeks from their precious murder simulators.

Larry posted the news about the updated Zune Pass music subscription service and after checking out the press release in detail I am going to sign back up for the monthly service. Getting to keep some songs for my own collection each month was the kicker that pushed me over the edge because now there is some real tangible value from the service in case it ever ends.

I have a very small personal collection of music and enjoy using subscription services because I have a broad range of tastes (classic rock, christian, jazz, country, etc.) and enjoy trying out lots of different genres. I used the Yahoo! Music service for a couple of years on my mobile phones and devices (it worked on Nokia Nseries and Windows Mobile devices). I tried the Zune Pass music subscription a couple of times in the past, but never went longer than a couple of months because I stopped carrying my Zune. The new deal lets you keep 10 songs per month (about a US$10 value) for the same US$14.99 monthly subscription fee (I pay tax too because I am in Washington State with Microsoft). Still, if I can keep DRM-free tracks each month and build up my collection then I am happy.

Now, if Microsoft could add Zune support to Windows Mobile then I would be extremely happy to take my music with me everywhere. For now, I will use my 4GB Black Zune to listen to music.

Orb 2.0 brings live television streaming to iPhone, no jailbreak needed

Graiphone Orb, one of my long-time favorite applications for remotely streaming home media has finally come to the iTunes AppStore. Up to now, Orb was only possible on jailbroken phones, but somehow, Apple has approved the application for everyday use. With the $9.99 application, you can access and view various content on a home Windows PC right on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The Orb folks say that a version for Macs and Linux computers is coming as well. What I always liked about Orb is that is smartly manages the audio or video stream based on your connection speed: it's always optimized. So what can you stream on your handheld while away from home?

* Music stored on your home computer (DRM-free)
* Videos that you've downloaded at home or created yourself
* Photos in your home library
* Live television from a TV tuner card
* A connected webcam... I use this to see if the cats are sitting in my office chair when I'm out.

I'm still not sure how Apple approved this (although I'm happy they did) and I wonder what AT&T will have to say about this. One of the biggest features is the live television content streaming and although AT&T doesn't offer it to iPhone owners, they do have a television content package that they sell for other handsets. Maybe the carrier doesn't care since they can't get their upsell package on the iPhone?

Orb offers a free but limited version if you want to get a feel for how it works. I've used it extensively in the past for webcam streaming, audio content and live television; it's always been a solid solution. Until SlingMedia comes up with an iPhone solution, this might be the only way to get live television on a non-jailbroken iPhone for quite a while...

iCEphone Mobile Communicator

This is the iCEphone, a do-it-all mobile communication device developed by Edinburgh-based Medicalphone. Comes with three independent panels, the company calls the iCEphone a micro-notebook.

The iCEphone is powered by a Freescale iMX31 532 Mhz processor and features a 3-inch touchscreen on one of the panels and a QWERTY keyboard on another. It has a 3.1 Megapixel camera, integrated support for GPS and WiFi. There is also a layer with some function keys.

iCEphone runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. It supports quad-band GSM and 3G UMTS/HSDPA.

Mobispine's iPhone MMS application... for the entire universe?

We heard yesterday that Telia customers might be getting an MMS app for their iPhones, and that it was being developed by the carrier themselves, with plans to launch in the next two months. Well, today we've gotten word that Mobispine is likely the developer of said application, and that they have plans to offer it to carriers all over planet Earth. Mobispine says that the app will be branded to each particular operator, and distributed via Apple's App Store, but we don't know when all of this is going to go down. Now we'd just like to meet the caveman owner of the iPhone pictured above who needed to be told (on November 15th!) that "Obama will be our next president."

HP's TouchSmart tx2z multitouch convertible tablet starts at $1,149

Oh sure, you could select Dell's multitouch-enabled Latitude XT over HP's latest, but given the $1,829 starting price of the former, we'd say the TouchSmart tx2z is looking a lot more delectable these days. Hailed as the first multitouch "consumer" convertible tablet (a claim that's certainly open for debate), the 12.1-inch tx2 gets going at just $1,149.99, though HP's "recommended" configuration starts at $1,223.99. The baseline setup includes Vista Home Premium, a 2.1GHz AMD Turion X2, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics set, 250GB of HDD space and a built-in webcam. As of now, the estimated build date shows December 8th, so we'd get that order in five minutes ago if you're looking to ensure a holiday delivery.
